A Review of Engine’s Performance When Supercharging by a Pressure Wave Supercharger

Improving the performance of internal combustion engines (ICE), together with lowering emissions, are main targets for specialists in automotive field. One option increasing engine efficiency is creating a considerable amount boost inlet air by means supercharging. In addition to common turbochargers, an alternative solution that has interested researchers almost century pressure wave supercharger (PWS). This paper is, at first, complimentary tribute most studied, experimented and improved PW supercharging technology from 50′s present. Second, this review emphasizes achieved ICEs when using supercharging, highlighting limits these parameters different operating conditions, based on reported results literature. It also provides overview technology, its advantages disadvantages suggests some technical solutions or geometric adjustments improve operation. Even though recent years registered decrease interest, there still preoccupations, especially aeronautical industry, justified profitability simplicity devices. The theoretical work can be exploited practically PWS design applications.
